>>> Sal and I were extremely fortunate to have spent a Semester at The University of Illinois in 1982/3 as recipients of Angus Australia’s, The University of Illinois and Dalgety’s Scholarship. We are extremely grateful for the opportunity and to acknowledge our gratitude and as a mark of our respect to the late Professor Dr. Doug Parrett we are donating the proceeds from the sale of Dulverton Dell S135 at our Bull Sale on 24th May 2023, to The Angus Youth Foundation.
>>> We have spoken with Mr Scott Wright, C.E.O. at Angus Australia and he will ensure that these proceeds are directed to a future successful recipient of the Angus Australia University of Illinois Scholarship or equivalent North American program.
>>> Doug Parrett who unfortunately passed away late last year was the
>>> staff member at The U of I who organised our courses and on campus accommodation. Doug was a lecturer in animal production and coach of the University Livestock judging teams. Doug was a wonderful teacher, I consider myself very fortunate to have been a member of Doug’s Livestock classes, the intensity of which I had never witnessed before. It was these classes that inspired me to include many of Doug’s formats when I returned to Farrer. I am extremely grateful for Doug’s efforts in organising for me to attend Reproduction and Genetics lectures. Doug’s best mate on staff was Dr. Tom Carr, Dr. Tom headed The Meat Science faculty and coached the University Meats judging Team. Dr. Tom set out a Meat Science course work program for me that was just so amazing and laid the foundation for my future roles in Aus-Meat and MSA.
>>> There is no doubting the fact that the experience gained in the various Livestock courses paved the way for my being invited to judge at numerous Agricultural shows Australia wide, including various breeds at every ‘Royal Show “ across the country (except Perth), an honour I shall cherish until the day I die.
>>> The opportunities afforded Sal and I by this wonderful Scholarship have been Life Changing, if we had to single out the most important it would most definitely be in providing us with the Inspiration, The Knowledge and The “Drive” to pursue our passion. That passion being the breeding of cattle that fulfil not only the on farm productive parameters but also that of satisfying the beef consumers expectations for eating quality consistently and price competitively.
>>> Might we take this opportunity of urging those of you in the age bracket 20 to 30 to follow The Foundation its many and varied activities in particular The Illinois Scholarship qualifying process, remembering you have to be in it to win it. Even if a Scholarship to a University isn’t your go, let me say from experience the many and varied activities are extremely challenging, normally fun and they do provide you with the opportunity of meeting great people with similar goals and aspirations. Go for it !!
